Connolly Weaves a Narrative

Sep 03, 2010

Gerry Connolly is telling voters he inherited 10 percent unemployment.  In reality, he inherited 7.2 percent unemployment later revised to 7.6 percent. This is the same Connolly who voted for a failed $862 billion stimulus bill to keep unemployment from going above 8 percent.  Connolly is so desperate to shift attention from his failed record he'll say anything.

Connolly’s Stimulus: Economic Failure, Millions in Wasteful Spending

Aug 04, 2010

In response to Gerry Connolly’s support for millions in reckless spending contained in the failed $862 billion stimulus, Fimian said, ""We know the stimulus has failed to create lasting jobs on any large scale, and the jobs it did create came with price tags of several hundred thousand dollars each in some cases," Fimian said. "And according to a recent report from Senators Coburn and McCain, we find out it is loaded with outrageous wasteful projects that do absolutely nothing to stimulate economic growth."

Among the projects cited in the report:

--$62 million was spent on building an unnecessary tunnel under the Allegheny River in Pittsburgh, a project Pennsylvania’s Democrat Governor Ed Rendell called “a tragic mistake”

--$308 million to a subsidiary of British Petroleum (BP) for a construction project that won’t begin until late 2011

--$39 million for Kansas politicians to renovate their offices and State House

--$54 million to an Indian tribe for a WNBA practice facility in Connecticut

--$762,000 went to the University of North Carolina to develop a device to allowing "choreographers to explore interactive dance without always having a full cast of dancers present."

--$144,000 to study the effect of cocaine on monkeys

Connolly’s Attempts to Overhaul Health Programs Bad For Federal Employees

Jul 27, 2010

Jim Martin of the 60 Plus Association wrote an article on Gerry Connolly’s support for overhauling federal employees healthcare plans:

Now that Congress has rammed through health reform, several Members, including Congressman Gerry Connolly (D-VA), serving the 11th district, have wasted no time identifying another program to “reform,” broken or not. Unfortunately, it seems that the Federal Employees Health Benefit’s Program (FEHBP) has landed in their crosshairs in the form of bill HR 4489.

The goal of the bill is to completely overhaul, or, in the words of co-sponsor Congressman Stephen Lynch (D-MA), “blow up” FEHBP, and give Congress new powers to control pharmacy prices, evolving from its enormously popular current state, to a program more akin to Medicaid’s price.

The goal here, as with health care, is to consolidate government power, limit choice and competition and cater to liberal special interests. Their approach seems more focused on scoring ideological points than putting beneficiaries’ needs first, all but guaranteeing poorer health care for FEHBP enrollees who thought they were getting a good deal.

Record Federal Deficits for 2010 and 2011

Jul 26, 2010

Reports show this year’s and next year’s deficits will exceed last year’s record deficit of $1.4 trillion

In response, Keith said, “Federal spending is simply out-of-control. When the politicians controlling the federal checkbook are borrowing 41 cents for every dollar they spend, we have reached an untenable position. This fiscal madness threatens our economy, our national security, and every family in the nation, both in the short term and generations off.”
“We can get federal spending under control, but not with the same big spending career politicians in office,”Fimian added. “We must behave responsibly, and a good place to start is undoing the trillion dollar deficits and trillions more Congressman Gerry Connolly has added to the national debt during 19 months in office.”
“Controlling spending will not only get the nation back on sound fiscal footing, but help eliminate the uncertainty that is causing companies not to hire,” Fimian saReports show this year’s and next year’s deficits will exceed last year’s record deficit of $1.4 trillion

Connolly Shoots Himself in the Foot on the Economy

Jul 20, 2010

In yesterday’s Washington Post, Gerry Connolly reiterated how out-of-touch he is with northern Virginians and his lack of understanding of how the economy grows, saying “job creation is ‘less important’ to his constituents than the 'Sophie's choice' of a double-dip recession or higher deficits.”

Keith Fimian responded: “Gerry Connolly once again demonstrates he is the reason we find ourselves in the mess we are in and why he is exactly the wrong person to get us out. He can't fix our economy and get skyrocketing deficits under control. Gerry Connolly gets an ‘F’ on job creation and deficit reduction. His economic policies have failed, but his prescription to fix the economy remains the same: borrow, tax and spend.”

“At a time when northern Virginians are worried about their jobs, their mortgages and their retirements, the last thing they need is a representative in Washington who places the economy on the back burner because he doesn’t understand that the out-of-control spending he supports is jeopardizing northern Virginia jobs,” Fimian said.

Congress Can Create an Environment Favorable to Job Creation

Jun 29, 2010

Fimian outlined his plan to put Americans back to work saying, “We need American businesses to create private sector jobs across this great nation, and that begins with unleashing the creative genius and entrepreneurial spirit of the American people,” Fimian said. “The federal government simply cannot create real jobs on any large scale. And the jobs it is creating are either temporary or the result of new government programs, mountains of reckless spending and trillions of dollars that future generations will have to pay back.”

“The current policies coming out of Washington are a deterrent to economic growth,” Fimian said. “What small businessperson wants to invest in this punishing environment? If Connolly and the rest of the big spending career politicians would stop doing harm, entrepreneurs and small business owners would be able to plan and invest in their businesses so that they can grow again and create the jobs everyone wants but that no one seems to understand how to create.”

Fimian Six-Point Job Plan

1. Eliminate the capital gains tax on start-up companies for five years. Venture capital lending to start ups has virtually disappeared amidst the talk of even higher taxes coming their way. Ending the confusion by eliminating this tax will significantly increase the number of start-ups and the number of new jobs.

Anniversary of Cap and Trade Vote

Jun 28, 2010

Last weekend marked the one year anniversary of Gerry Connolly’s vote for cap and trade.  Connolly joined other Virginia liberals Jim Moran and Bobby Scott in supporting the job killing legislation.

The Republican Party of Virginia notes, “The cap and trade legislation these members voted for could cause 56,000 Virginians to lose their jobs. It would force Virginia’s families who are already struggling in these tough economic times to pay hundreds of additional dollars each year for energy costs.”

Connolly Confirms Effort to Duck Budgetary Responsibility

Jun 23, 2010

Yesterday, it became official that House Democrats and Gerry Connolly would fail to pass a budget resolution for the first time in history.

Keith Fimian responded: “Instead of passing a budget resolution focused on cutting wasteful spending and enacting policies to spur economic growth, Gerry Connolly and the rest of the liberal career politicians are running for election year cover. Connolly and his fellow big spenders know their constituents oppose their reckless behavior, but they have every intention of continuing it so they are avoiding going on the record with a budget proposal until after Election Day.”

Connolly and his party are forfeiting their responsibility to govern, not wanting to again publicly declare their support for the massive deficits they have created as they run for election year political cover. On May 22, 2010, Connolly confirmed his strategy, telling the Los Angeles Times, “I'm not going to vote for anything with that magnitude [of deficit],” Connolly said. “Name one person who won or lost an election because they didn't get a budget resolution passed.”

Washington Post Exposes Connolly’s False Attack

Jun 16, 2010

The Washington Post exposed the "creative editing" behind Gerry Connolly's blatantly false attack. Connolly is desperate to change the subject from his record of tax hikes and spending increases.

Connolly Fact Check #2: Connolly Launches First Blatantly False Attack of 2010

Jun 15, 2010

Desperate to shift the attention of voters’ away from his failed big government, big spending record, Gerry Connolly is already resorting to false attacks just as he did in 2008.  Connolly is alleging that Keith Fimian supports repealing the 17th Amendment.  The record actually shows that on WTOP's Politics Program with Mark Plotkin on June 4, 2010, Fimian concluded his statement on the issue saying, "I would entertain both sides of that argument before I would say yes or no, but I am inclined to say no."

Connolly takes "no" and claims it means "yes".  An outright falsehood.  The Washington Post notes Connolly’s “creative editing” of Fimian’s comments and points out that Connolly’s charge isn’t true.

This is not surprising as Connolly engaged in a series of smears in 2008 that were widely criticized for being false.

Gerry Connolly habitually distorts the facts to avoid his embarrassing record of failure. This is the same Gerry Connolly that wants people to believe he is a deficit hawk and 'pragmatic', even though he has managed to run up the largest deficit in history and spent trillions of dollars in less than two years in office.

Connolly bankrupted Fairfax County and now he is rubber stamping the reckless spending that is bankrupting America.

Previously Gerry Connolly had boasted how he had supported a pay freeze, neglecting to mention that he had previously taken large pay raises at taxpayer expense.

Fimian Statement on Centreville Day-Laborer Site

Jun 03, 2010

Regarding the proposed day-laborer site in Centreville, Fimian said, “With plans for a day-labor center moving forward, I join with Centreville residents and business owners in opposition.  As well intentioned as proponents of this project may be, it sends entirely to the wrong message to people who have, in many cases, broken our laws to be here and invites a host of problems including increased potential for crime in the area.”

"If the federal government would just do its job, states, localities and well intentioned citizens would not be left with the responsibility of figuring out what to do with illegal immigrants.  The rule of law is a fundamental underpinning of our way of life and our system of government. Unfortunately most of the career politicians in Washington love to write new laws, but lack the resolve or good judgment, or both, to enforce existing ones.”

“There are a lot of commonsense steps we can take to address this problem, including securing our borders by whatever means necessary and having police check the immigration status of anyone arrested for committing a crime. Above all, we must make sure career politicians like Gerry Connolly, who are eager for millions of new voters, are not successful in their efforts to grant amnesty to illegal immigrants whose very first action was breaking the law to enter our nation.”

Gone to Raise Taxes

Jun 02, 2010

Which is worse . . . skipping work or raising taxes?

Pat Herrity wants us to trust him with our vote, but his own record as County Supervisor shows we can't even be sure he'll show up for work. Supervisor Herrity has a track record of failing to attend meetings and missing votes on issues that he says are important.

Official government records show that Pat Herrity failed to vote over 103 times as Fairfax Supervisor.  Supervisor Herrity even skipped out on 40% of meetings on the Virginia Transportation Commission; even though he says transportation is a priority.  But Herrity did show up to raise over 25 taxes and fees!

Connolly’s Economic Policies Have Failed

May 27, 2010

Private Pay Shrinks to Lowest Level in History, National Debt Surpasses $13 Trillion

Gerry Connolly’s economic policies consist of mountains of new taxes, unprecedented borrowing, unsustainable reckless spending, government takeovers, stifling regulations, and every other policy Nancy Pelosi and Democrat leaders demand.  The result, according to the USA Today, is that Americans have received the smallest share of personal income in U.S. history from private businesses.  At the same time, government provided benefits, like food stamps and unemployment insurance, have risen to their highest level ever.

The economic policies of Connolly, Pelosi and Democrats in Congress are destroying jobs, impoverishing families, and robbing future generations of economic opportunity and the chance to live the American Dream.

Rubber Stamp

May 26, 2010

Pat Herrity likes to talk about being anti-tax.  But his record tells a different story. He’s put his stamp of approval on tax after tax that hits homeowners and businesses hard.  These are critical facts, and this is a defining difference in this race.

Let's look at the facts: On April 28, 2008, Supervisor Herrity voted for Democrat Gerry Connnolly's new 11-cent property tax on businesses. The County then turned around and hired 19 new staff to help direct the spending of that money. Herrity raised taxes while the economy was tanking which forced businesses to let people go.
