Fairfax, VA – Keith Fimian, Republican candidate for Congress (VA-11), issued the following statement in response to news that Newfoundland Premier Danny Williams will have heart surgery in the United States rather than in Canada’s government run system:

“Williams’ decision to have heart surgery in the United States rather than in Canada is just another example of what we have to fear if Nancy Pelosi and Gerry Connolly’s government healthcare takeover becomes reality,” Fimian said. “The fact that Canadian government’s system is so over-stretched and ill-equipped that a Canadian provincial premier has to seek out heart surgery in the United States is the perfect example of why we must defeat any effort to adopt such a system.”

“Our health care system is the best in the world because it fosters competition, innovation and excellence, and consumers have real choices regarding their medical care.  By no means is it perfect, but we can continue to improve our system by lowering the cost of insurance through increased competition, including allowing insurance to be purchased across state lines, expanding consumer choices and pursuing tort reform that eliminates frivolous law suits that drive up the cost of medical care.  What is for certain is that government-run healthcare will reduce the quality of care, increase costs, stifle innovation and create yet another unresponsive government bureaucracy that views Americans as a statistics and not as individuals,” said Fimian.

“People from other countries come to the United States precisely because we have the best healthcare in the world.  So let’s work to make the best system even better, not destroy it,” Fimian said.  “The fact that Gerry Connolly wants to replace our healthcare system with a government run one is just one more example that he is here to advance himself politically, not better represent Northern Virginians.

Republican Keith Fimian is running for Congress against Democrat Gerry Connolly in Virginia’s 11th District. Fimian’s platform includes creating jobs, holding the line on taxes and putting the brakes on out-of-control deficit spending in Congress.
